One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents is:
“When should we book our newborn photos?”
The short answer?
Earlier than you think — but with flexibility built in.
Here’s a simple, realistic guide to booking newborn photography in Victoria, Cordova Bay, and the surrounding Saanich Peninsula, without stress or rigid timelines.
When to Book Your Newborn Photographer
The ideal time to book your newborn session is during your second trimester or early third trimester.
Booking ahead:
- Ensures availability around your due date
- Gives you time to plan without pressure
- Allows flexibility once baby arrives
When you book, we don’t lock in a firm session date right away — instead, we reserve space around your due date and finalize timing once your baby is here.
The Best Time to Photograph Your Newborn
Newborn sessions typically take place within the first 5–14 days after birth.
During this window, babies tend to:
- Sleep more deeply
- Settle easily
- Enjoy being curled up and swaddled
That said — this is not a rule.
I photograph babies well beyond two weeks old, especially for in-home sessions where the focus is connection, comfort, and real moments rather than strict posing.
Morning Sessions: My Go-To (But Not a Must)
Most of my newborn sessions happen in the morning, and here’s why:
- Babies are often sleepier earlier in the day
- Natural light tends to be softer and more consistent
- Parents usually feel more rested
Morning sessions also allow us to move slowly and calmly, without rushing through feeds or soothing.
That said, I’m always flexible — especially for families who need a later start or want to work around siblings, recovery, or unpredictable newborn schedules.
What If Baby Arrives Early or Late?
This happens all the time — and it’s completely okay.
When you book:
- I build flexibility around your due date
- You simply let me know once baby arrives
- We adjust the session timing together
No pressure. No strict rules. Just support.
In-Home Newborn Sessions = Built-In Flexibility
One of the biggest benefits of in-home newborn photography is how adaptable it is.
Sessions at home allow for:
- Feeding breaks
- Outfit or wrap changes
- Time to settle baby naturally
- Comfortable pacing for parents
This is especially helpful for families in Victoria, Saanich, Brentwood Bay, Sidney, and Cordova Bay who want a relaxed, baby-led experience without leaving the house.
What If You Miss the “Newborn Window”?
If life gets busy or recovery takes longer than expected, you haven’t missed your chance.
Older newborn sessions:
- Capture more alert expressions
- Focus on connection and family interaction
- Are just as meaningful and beautiful
There’s no “too late” — only different seasons worth documenting.
