One of the most common concerns parents share before their newborn session is:

“What should we wear?”

The good news?

You don’t need to buy anything new or overthink it.

In-home newborn photography is about connection, comfort, and real moments — and what you wear should support that feeling, not distract from it.

Here’s a simple guide to choosing outfits that photograph beautifully in your home.

Keep It Soft, Neutral & Timeless

For newborn sessions, I always recommend sticking to:

  • Soft neutrals (cream, beige, oatmeal, soft grey, muted greens)
  • Light textures (knits, linen, cotton, waffle fabrics)
  • Simple, timeless pieces

Neutral tones photograph beautifully in natural light and keep the focus where it belongs — on your baby and your connection as a family.

Coordinate — Don’t Match

You don’t need everyone in the same colour.

Instead, aim for outfits that:

  • Work within the same colour family
  • Feel cohesive without being identical
  • Avoid bold patterns or logos

Think: soft layers that complement one another rather than compete.

This approach works especially well in in-home sessions throughout Victoria, Cordova Bay, Saanich, Brentwood Bay, and Sidney, where homes often have beautiful natural light and calm tones.

What Parents Should Wear

Comfort is key — especially in those early postpartum days.

For moms, I recommend:

  • Flowy dresses or cozy knits
  • Soft fabrics that move easily
  • Neutral or earthy tones

For partners:

  • Simple sweaters, henleys, or button-ups
  • Neutral pants or jeans without heavy distressing

If it feels good to wear, it will photograph well.

What Baby Should Wear (Or Not Wear!)

Less is more when it comes to newborn outfits.

Great options include:

  • Simple sleepers in neutral tones
  • A diaper + wrap
  • A sentimental swaddle or blanket from home

Many families love incorporating their own wrap or swaddle — it adds a deeply personal touch and makes the images feel even more meaningful.

I’ll guide you through gentle posing and natural moments, so baby stays comfortable and relaxed throughout the session.

Bare Feet Are Perfect

No need for shoes.

Bare feet photograph beautifully and help keep the session relaxed and natural — especially during bed or couch moments.

Use Your Home as Inspiration

Your home plays a big role in your session.

Before your shoot, take a quick look around:

  • What colours do you naturally gravitate toward?
  • What tones already exist in your bedroom or living room?

Choosing outfits that blend with your space helps create a calm, cohesive gallery that feels true to your family.

Don’t Stress — I’m Here to Help

Once your session is booked,  feel free to request:
